Look at this picture. Now imagine this. I’m alone in the Mojave Desert. No service. No trails. Just volcanic rock and wind. I’m rockhounding. Walking. Slow. Focused. Then I hear tires. A Porsche SUV appears on this narrow one-way dirt road. They slow down… way down. Windows up. Hands tight on the wheel. We make eye contact. And I realize something. From their point of view… there’s a man… walking alone… miles from anything… in the middle of nowhere. I’m dusty. Backpack on. Crazy beanie one And in my hand? An 18-inch drive tool I’d been using to pry rocks. Long. Metal. Heavy. I can literally see it click in their heads. This guy isn’t hiking. He isn’t sightseeing. This is how people disappear. They don’t stop. They don’t ask questions. They pick up speed and drive past me like they just escaped a scene they weren’t supposed to see. And here’s the part that makes it worse. This road only goes one direction. The only place it leads… is the top of the crater. So I keep walking. Calm. Quiet. Unbothered. Eventually I head back, get in my truck, and drive up the same road. When I reach the top… Their Porsche is parked. Doors just opened They’re standing close together. Watching everything. Then they hear my truck behind them. I get out. Slow. Tool still in my hand. They freeze. I swear they thought I was about to explain where the bodies were buried. And I just go, real calm: “Hey, you’re good. There are some really dope rocks out here.” The relief hits instantly. Nervous laughter. Shoulders drop. One of them says, “We thought you were… doing something else.” I laugh and say, “Nope. Just rockhounding.” The look on thier faces….i internally died of laughter And sometimes… You just look like one of those people who you should fear when in reality your just an R&B singing rock loving teddy bear!
